About Janet

Janet Yates is the founder, owner, and head trainer of Body Alignment South Africa. Based in Somerset West in the heart of the Helderberg, Janet has dedicated more than two decades to helping people find relief from pain and improve their quality of life through a holistic, body-centred approach to healing.

Janet holds a degree in Psychology from Stellenbosch University and a Counselling Diploma from the South African College of Applied Psychology. Her professional journey led her to train in Directed Pressure Point Technique (DPPT), after which she opened her own practice in Somerset West in 2004.

Over the years, Janet explored and researched a wide range of complementary and holistic healing modalities, all sharing a common philosophy: the body's remarkable ability to heal itself when physical, emotional, and lifestyle-related obstacles are addressed. Her particular interest in the relationship between emotional stress and physical pain became a cornerstone of her work.

In 2013, Janet combined her knowledge, clinical experience, and passion for helping others into the development of the Body Alignment method. This unique modality integrates physical and emotional techniques designed to support the body's natural healing processes. As demand for the approach grew, Janet began training practitioners in 2017 through practical, hands-on courses. During the COVID pandemic, she expanded her training programmes online, making Body Alignment accessible to students both locally and internationally.

Today, Janet continues to practise and teach from her Somerset West clinic. As the personal trainer and mentor behind every Body Alignment practitioner, her expertise forms the foundation of the Body Alignment South Africa network.

A session with Janet is thorough, intuitive, and results-focused. She carefully assesses posture, movement patterns, muscular imbalances, and areas of tension before applying targeted techniques to release deep-seated holding patterns within the body. Her warm, professional approach creates a supportive environment where clients often experience significant relief, improved mobility, and a renewed sense of wellbeing.

Janet's journey into the world of healing began with a personal experience which inspired her to dive deeper into the world of self-healing techniques. We asked Janet to share a little more about her journey:

Body Alignment โ€” spine and muscle anatomy

What is Body Alignment?

Stress, long hours at a desk, driving, poor posture, and emotional strain cause muscles to develop sustained contractions known as hypertonic spasms. These tight muscles pull the spine and joints out of alignment, compressing nerves and causing pain, numbness, and reduced function.

Body Alignment uses gentle, targeted pressure to release this deep muscular tension, allowing the skeleton to realign and the body to heal naturally โ€” no medication, no cracking, fully clothed.

What to Expect in Your First Session

Arrive & Consult

You'll have a brief conversation with Janet about your symptoms, medical history, and what you hope to achieve.

Assessment & Treatment

Janet will begin by assessing your posture and overall body alignment before applying targeted pulse pressure techniques to key muscles along the spine and other areas of tension. Because the body functions as an interconnected whole, each session considers the relationship between posture, muscular balance, movement patterns, and emotional stress. By supporting better alignment and reducing muscular restriction, the body is better able to function, adapt, and heal naturally.

Post-Session

You may feel immediate relief, lightness, or increased mobility. Drink plenty of water and allow your body time to continue the healing process.

You remain fully clothed throughout.

Q&A with Janet

What motivated you to begin teaching, and how has that journey been for you?

For years, my friends, clients, and even a little voice in my head encouraged me to share my knowledge and teach Body Alignment. At first, I had no idea where to begin or how to go about it.

One thing I knew for sure was that it would be a shame if this modality wasn't passed on. Body Alignment has helped so many people release pain and heal their bodies โ€” it felt wrong to imagine it not continuing to help others in the future.

I'm a big believer in letting your subconscious work through life's dilemmas if you give it the time and space to do so. Teaching stayed at the back of my mind for a while, quietly waiting for its moment. Then, one day, without planning it, I sat down in my office and started sketching out the Body Alignment course. Ideas flowed effortlessly, and within six months, I was teaching my first student.

Since then, teaching has been one of the most rewarding parts of my journey. Seeing that light bulb moment when a student realises they can do this is priceless. Watching their confidence and self-empowerment grow is incredibly heartwarming.

Every time I see practitioners gathered at our workshops, I feel so proud of what we've built and of the ripple effect Body Alignment is creating in the world.
